Ever since The Eraser, Thom Yorke has almost patented his own signature electronic sound: stark, syncopated rhythms, understated but catchy melodies, and the whole dark, brooding atmosphere thing. From the moment the beat comes in on Hearing Damage, you can tell for sure that it's a Thom Yorke-Nigel Godrich song. But what i really love about this track is Thom's vocal. He sings in that low, deep rasp that he's used alot more in recent years, and his voice is right up front instead of being wrapped up in the electronics, making the song much more direct and affecting.
And of course Thom has that ability to turn the simplest, most harmless lyrics into something so much more. Here, he makes the seemingly typical love song line "You can do no wrong, in my eyes" sound eerily intimate and haunting. My other favourite line: "They say you're getting better, but you don't feel any better". This song being on New Moon probably made that movie a little more bearable too. Well, okay maybe not.
