I started listening to the band Deerhunter this year, through their amazing 2008 album Microcastle, fascinated by their shoegazy and generally dark music. So when i heard this track by Atlas Sound, the solo project of lead singer Bradford Cox, i was surprised as it was one of the happiest songs i've heard in awhile, with that chimy loop and those sweet harmonies.
It might have been down to the influence of Animal Collective's Lennox, but it's not just the music that's uplifting. For someone who always seemed to be writing lyrics from dark places in his life, Walkabout sounded like Cox leaving these places. "Forget the things you left behind, through looking back you may go blind", a particularly pretty line.
Ps. Well obviously my plan to finish this countdown by the new year failed spectacularly, the past week or so has been crazy. Mostly good-crazy though. Hopefully i'll be done by the start of school next week, :(
