Videotape
There are some songs that can be listened to everyday. Then there are those that can't, but some of these can hit you hard when you least expect it. I think Videotape belongs in the latter. I was just watching this and i thought, everything about this is perfect. The cyclical-ish melody (which i really thought i'd gotten bored of), the way Thom's voice cracks a little, that step-up/step-down part that starts at 1:45 of the video. And the way i remember listening to this on the plane to Australia with my family in 2006 just before i enlisted, staring out the window at the clouds as Thom goes, "When i'm at the pearly gates, this'll be on my videotape".
It's like this song marked that feeling and that part of my life and stored it in a box in my head, and i can open it up whenever i hear this. There are many different versions of this song, besides this one there was the 2006 live one with the amazing, over the top guitar build up, and of course the one on In Rainbows which is even more austere but i love for the drum loops that sound like a video recorder running out of tape, which in the context of the song is one of the saddest things i've ever heard. Anyway, someone posted an amazing remix on MT that seems to combine all three versions plus the ambient washes of Mk1, it is truly awesome. Download here.
Anyway, i've been meaning to blog about the gigs i saw in January but school has been kinda crazy (again). Hopefully i can once i finish my 108289 pages of readings!
