There's alot of conflict in the story, between Daniel Plainview and his rivals (especially Eli played by an electric Paul Dano), him and his son etc, but the one that fascinated the most was within Plainview himself. I could see a sort of tortured, lonely vulnerability about him, especially in the way he took in and confided in the fake Henry, how he described his contempt for everyone and everything, it was like he was conscious of it but could do nothing to stop himself hurtling towards the anger and hate inside him. Like how he spites and disowns his son in a drunken rage at the end, and of course that last scene, with his final words, "I'm finished.."
I thought the show did drag on in a couple of places, but the few stunning, epic scenes and the relationship between Eli and Daniel Plainview more than make up for it. I can't believe i'm two years late on this.
