There Will Be Blood

Okay i've finally watched this after two years of wanting to. And though it wasn't the easiest show or the most entertaining or whatever (and you know this is coming), i can now say i appreciate what an amazing piece of art it is. It is equal amounts ferocity, brilliance, shock and awe, but also it is unrelentingly human in its portrayal of one man's journey into madness and nothingness. The performances are so morbidly good you can't take your eyes off most of the cast, the cinematography is beautiful, Jonny Greenwood's score (the reason i wanted to watch in the first place) is as key to the tone and delivery of the movie as any other part. But i think the best part of the show is how Daniel Day Lewis allows you too see through his character's cynical, mad, and tortured eyes.

There's alot of conflict in the story, between Daniel Plainview and his rivals (especially Eli played by an electric Paul Dano), him and his son etc, but the one that fascinated the most was within Plainview himself. I could see a sort of tortured, lonely vulnerability about him, especially in the way he took in and confided in the fake Henry, how he described his contempt for everyone and everything, it was like he was conscious of it but could do nothing to stop himself hurtling towards the anger and hate inside him. Like how he spites and disowns his son in a drunken rage at the end, and of course that last scene, with his final words, "I'm finished.."

I thought the show did drag on in a couple of places, but the few stunning, epic scenes and the relationship between Eli and Daniel Plainview more than make up for it. I can't believe i'm two years late on this.
