What can i say about Chan Marshall? My first impressions live were: stunningly beautiful. Amazing voice. Eccentric, which i liked. Right from the moment she came on stage you could tell she never wants to be the centre of attention, and throughout the gig she often sang either with her back to us or prancing around the dark skirts of the stage. And yet this was just part of her charm.
The mood of that night seemed to suit the performance to a tee, or at least the beginning of the set; dark, slow and a little sleepy. The funereal pace of some of the songs and the way she seemed bent on changing the melodies of her own tunes and her many covers (which ranged from Joni Mitchell to James Brown that night) made it hard to follow at times. Of course, her voice is a thing of beauty. Deep and soothing, yet so bluesy and with a rasp; the folk and soul songs she was singing had her unmistakable mark on them.
The 'hits' of course were great. Metal Heart, Where Is My Love, Sea of Love and so on. And she ended the night with roses for anyone lucky enough to be in the first couple of rows. Overall a charming night.
