The Beatles - Nowhere Man
The quintessential Beatles three part harmony. Love it.
Spoon - Don't You Evah
This song is made by the funky bassline. I like how simple and efficient the whole song is, it's the way it is with most Spoon songs, everything has an exact role and there's nothing superfluous about it.
Shugo Tokumaru - La La Radio
Everytime i listen to Shugo's album Exit, i like it even more. It's so chock full of melodies and amazing little musical details that i find something new everytime. For example, i honestly can't count how many instruments he's playing in La La Radio. It starts slow and builds up to this gorgeous breakdown.
Nina Simone - Feeling Good
What a voice the High Priestess of Soul had. Equally compelling and emotional as it was dark and dramatic, it holds you in a bind and doesn't let you go.
R.E.M. - The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite
One of, if not the, happiest R.E.M. songs. Interestingly on arguably their saddest album, Automatic For The People. I can't put my finger on exactly why this song feels so uplifting. Could be the irresistably catchy hook, or those strings. Could be the slightly silly lyrics, or the way Michael Stipe sings them, like he never had a care in the world. That chuckle at the start of the third chorus is one of my favourite Stipe moments ever.
James Devane - Rhubarb (Aphex Twin cover)
Classical guitar cover of Aphex Twin's poignant ambient piece. Someone put it together with this video, and it's just perfect. A video about nothing and everything all at once. I really like it anyway.
Miracle Legion - Paradise
Rocking track from the late 80's. Miracle Legion were often compared to early "college rock radio" era R.E.M. and i can guess why from the jangly guitars in this one, though they're probably not that similar. I find Mark Mulcahy's lyrics to be strangely moving, they have this tinge of sentiment and nostalgia which i'm not sure i understand but i certainly get.
Akron/Family - Franny/You're Human
Really beautiful closer to their first album that i can really empathise with. "Please Lord give me strength, to be nobody, cause i am not my thoughts." They repeat this over and over like a prayer, set to a lilting melody and really pretty harmonies.
