The much hyped video for House of Cards is finally out (this will be a geeky post). Released on Google.com yesterday, all the hype has been about the fact that no cameras were used to film the thing, instead high tech rotating laser systems (Geometric Informatics and Velodyne Lidar, sounds like some Star Wars guy) were used to capture real time 3D images of Thom Yorke, a party scene and their environments, by reflecting light off different points and measuring the relative distances between them.
Its pretty damn cool if you ask me, although it doesn't do too much to hold the viewer's attention. The images of Thom and the female lead remind me of those metal pin things you stick your face in and leave an impression, but the wide shots of the industries and cable towers are strangely beautiful, especially when they start disintegrating. Thom was quoted as saying he liked how the videos of humans and real life were just mathematical points, and i think that's one reason why the video is so cool. Real people represented graphically by numerical data. Makes me wonder what if everyone and everything were just made up of digital data on God's Pentium 11000 (although the Matrix guy probably already thought of that)
The Making Of video is here, watch it to see all the super cool technology. The director also mentions in that vid that Thom said his two main inspirations and images for House of Cards were "vaporisation and a party scene". Your ears should be burning.. brilliant.
